Rep. Donna Shalala Announces Support of Landmark Social Security Proposal

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today, Rep. Donna Shalala joined the Chairman of the Ways & Means Social Security Subcommittee, John B. Larson (CT-01), in support of the ‘Social Security 2100 Act’ - a bill that would increase Social Security’s vital benefits while making the system financially secure throughout the 21st century.

“Social Security is the foundation of economic security for nearly all Americans. For decades, this earned benefit has provided a vital source of economic stability for retirees, people with disabilities, and survivors,” said Rep. Shalala. “Today, roughly 1 in 6 people in my district receive and rely on Social Security benefits.  With the Social Security 2100 Act, we will improve these benefits and preserve Social Security for generations to come.”

The Social Security 2100 Act would provide:

  • A benefit increase for all current and new beneficiaries.
  • An improved cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that better reflects the true costs incurred by seniors.
  • A more robust minimum benefit, so that someone who works their whole life does not retire into poverty.
  • A tax cut for over 12 million seniors by eliminating the tax on their Social Security benefits.

Social Security is the most important source of retirement income for 4 out of 5 seniors. It also provides protections to disabled workers and families who have lost a breadwinner. With common sense steps like those in the Social Security 2100 Act, Congress can improve benefits and ensure Social Security remains fiscally strong throughout the century.
