WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Donna Shalala (FL-27) released the following statement: “For years now, the regime of Daniel Ortega has undermined democracy and the rule of law in Nicaragua. Brave Nicaraguans have resisted the erosion of freedoms in their country, but Ortega has grown increasingly violent in order to implement in his authoritarian policies and practices. Nicaraguans now live in fear of arbitrary detention, punishment, torture, and death for supporting the return of democratic order. “The United States government has sanctioned the Ortega regime, but its repression has only grown more severe. Our government must continue to support the people of Nicaragua in their quest for a return to democracy and pursue every diplomatic option at its disposal to ensure that Ortega is no longer able to violate human rights of his citizens. I was proud to cosponsor this important resolution and honored to have ensure its passage.” ### |
