Testing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have published testing guidelines to help health care professionals make decisions about who needs to be tested. Testing is recommended for:
  • Hospitalized patients who have signs and symptoms compatible with COVID-19 in order to inform decisions related to infection control;

  • Other symptomatic individuals such as, older adults and individuals with chronic medical conditions and/or an immunocompromised state that may put them at higher risk for poor outcomes (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, receiving immunosuppressive medications, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease); and

  • Any persons, including healthcare personnel, who within 14 days of symptom onset had close contact with a suspect or laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patient, or who have a history of travel from affected geographic (national and international) areas within 14 days of their symptom onset.

For more information on testing, you can contact the Florida Health Department COVID-19 Hotline, which is open 24/7, at 1 (866) 779-6121, or the Miami Dade County Health Department at 305-324-2400. Note that there may be an increased volume of callers, and it may take some time to be connected. If you have a primary care doctor, you should call their office first for instructions on being screened for testing.

Some health care facilities also offer antibody tests. These tests check your blood for antibodies for COVID-19, which show if you previously contracted the virus. Antibodies are proteins that help fight off infections. Antibody tests should not be used to diagnose someone as being currently sick with COVID-19. It’s also unclear if those antibodies can provide protection (immunity) against reinfection. This means that we do not know at this time if antibodies make you immune to the virus. The CDC is evaluating the performance of commercially manufactured antibody tests in collaboration with other government agencies. To see if you have a current COVID-19 infection, you need a diagnostic test that checks respiratory samples, such as a swab from inside your nose. The locations below offer diagnostic testing.
